In Vientiane, the locals do a brisk business catering to Western tastes. The Italian restaurants, English pubs and even Tex Mex cafés are filled to the brim with backpackers.

But why do Westerners travel all the way to Vientiane just to spend their time hanging out with other Westerners? It’s something we don’t understand.
