Suffering

Many of the so-called ‘roads’ across the Altiplano are a nasty mix of sand and washboard.

Sometimes we could pedal over them. But more often than not, we were relegated to pushing.

Later I asked Harriet Pike how they managed to complete all of those sandy routes.

“We wore mountain climbing harnesses and hooked them to our frames. That way we didn’t have to push the bikes just using our arms.”  She replied.
